How to download Apps on a Mac

If downloading apps online (not from the Mac Appstore)

1. Be careful that you are downloading from reputable sites. You do not want to accidentally download malware!

2. Click the download button from the website.

3. Locate where you downloaded this app. The app should have the .dmg extension and look like this:

4. Double click the .dmg. This should leave you with a disk image file. It should look like this:

5. Double click into the disk image. Typically, once in the disk image, there are simple instructions as to how to install the app. This usually requires drawing the app into the Applications Folder on your Mac. If you do not see this but rather see a file named Installer, double click on that.

6. If using an installer, follow the instructions of the installer. The installer will likely prompt you to select an install location. This should be the Applications Folder of your Mac. The installer will likely also prompt you to enter your password, so enter your password as this is normal. 

7. The app should now be installed, so locate it wherever you installed it, and double click to open.

Installing an app from the Mac Appstore

1. Locate the app you wish to download on the Mac Appstore. There is a search bar in the upper-righthand corner.

2. Towards the upper-left of the screen containing the app you selected, there should be something displaying the price. If the app is free, it should say Get. Select this.

3. If you need to pay, make sure you have a credit card enabled for payment. Once you select this button, the same button should now say Install App. Select this.

4. You will likely have to enter your password, so enter your password. 

5. The app should now be installed (or installing) so locate it in your Applications folder, and double click to open it.
