Assignments: Submitting Assignments Online by Attachment or through Google Drive

Updated:

On SIS teachers can have students submit files online either by attachment or directly from their Google Drive accounts. Teachers need to set up the assignment correctly and to instruct their students on submitting and sharing work properly.

Teachers

Allow students to submit their work online when you create the assignment by clicking "onCampus submission" in the "File Submission" section of the new assignments page as illustrated in the screenshot below.

Then set "Number of files" to between 1 and 10. (If the "number of files" is set to 0 students will only be able to answer by typing in a text box.)

All other settings are the same as a normal assignment. Click "Save," and the assignment is ready to go. Be sure to explain the procedure below to the students.

Students

Students can submit their work in one of three ways.

1. They can type an answer directly into the text box. This comes to you in a text box. You can see it and grade it, but you can't give the student feedback digitally.

If students click “Attach Files” on the assignment detail page, they have two options.

2. They can attach a file from their computer. Depending on the type of file, you may be able to make comments on this document by typing or writing and sending it back to the student.

3. They then click “From Google Drive” to login to Google and select the appropriate files.

If a student selects a non-Google document from Google Drive, the file is handled the same as a file selected from the student’s local computer.

If a student selects a Google Document from Google Drive, the following screen includes a drop down menu entitled “File Type,” as indicated below.

  • In this menu, the default should be "Google Drive Link" and 99% of the time this is what you should use. It allows the student to submit the document as a link which the teacher can access directly from Google’s website. Teachers will then be able to comment, suggest, and edit, depending on sharing settings. The document is automatically shared with you once it is uploaded.
  • The student may alternatively choose "PDF" etc. to convert the file to a different format and submit it as an attachment for the teacher to download. The student must select a conversion format based on the Google Document type.

The student clicks "Attach" and she's done.

Teachers' Access to the document

When teachers access the Assignment Detail page, they are able to click on the name of each student to see all submitted files. Depending on how the student uploaded the files, they may see options to download, annotate, or share via the Google icon.

  • If a file is shared via Google Drive, the teacher will have access to all of the tools that Google Drive offers including commenting, editing, revision history, and many more. Once saved, the file will be automatically updated.
