When you are done using a Burke computer, you must logout of the system so that others can use the computer and so that others do not have access to your documents. If you forget to logout or do nothing on the computer, the system will automatically log you out after a short time.
To logout, click on the Apple menu in the upper left and select Log Out. A dialog box will ask if you are sure. Click Log Out. In a few seconds, your dock will slide off the screen, your top menu will disappear, and the Login window will reappear. This means you have successfully logged out. BE SURE that you have actually logged out before leaving the computer, as many programs and dialogs will not allow you to log out when they are open. If one of those (such as Software Update) is running when you attempt to log out, the computer will simply produce an error message and sit on the desktop, allowing anyone who comes along the ability to do things on your account.
Quick Tip: Logout Shortcut
To save time logging out, hit Shift + ⌘ + Q. If you do not want to be prompted with the "Are you sure?" message, hitShift + Option + ⌘ + Q.
