Automatically Filter Out Spam
Train Gmail
When you get spam messages, click the Spam button (it appears when you check the triangle box next to the replay button. A drop-down of options will pop up. Select either spam or phishing) This trains Gmail on what kind of email you consider spam.
You can also block the email address to prevent future emails from being received by this address.
Set Up a Specific Filter
You can also set Gmail up to immediately delete messages that match criteria you've specified. Note that this method does not train the spam filter AI, and is thus inferior to the training method above.
Click the triangle at the right of the search box to perform an advanced search.
- Specify what makes a message spam ("From: includes Alex White")
- Click "Create filter with this search" at the bottom-right.
- Choose to delete the message immediately.
- Confirm the filter, and apply to all messages that match the search.
Check Your Spam Folder for False Positives
Sometimes, mail you want gets marked as spam. If you think this has happened:
- In the list of labels on the left, click More if you don't see Spam.
Scroll down the list and click Spam.
- Open your message.
- If you can't find the message:
Click the triangle at the right of the search box to perform an advanced search.
- In the menu under Search, change "All Mail" to "Mail & Spam & Trash."
- Fill in the forms appropriately and click the blue magnifying glass to search.
- Open your message.
Click the Not Spam button to move the message back to your inbox — and train Gmail not to flag this kind of message in the future.
