How to use LabQuest and LabQuest Viewer

Updated:

LabGuest Viewer is a program that wirelessly interfaces with and controls LabQuest devices. This has a very obvious safety advantage as you can control and use the data collectors without having to be near the device and thus the experimental apparatus.

1. Use Self Service to install LabQuest Viewer.

2. Turn on your LabQuest device but do not put it in position for whatever experiment you are going to undergo.

3. Perform the following on the LabQuest device:

  1. Tap the house shaped button in the lower right corner of the screen to go to the main menu.
  2. Tap the Connections button in the main menu.
  3. Tap the gear in the upper righthand corner of the connection settings.
  4. This will open network settings. To the right of the word network: you should see a signal strength monitor, the words BurkeNet and a set of 4 numbers separated by periods. EG 192.168.0.15
  5. Copy this string of numbers and periods on to a piece of paper.
4. Open LabQuest Viewer. It should look like this:

5. Check the box next to "Specify", and enter the string of numbers and periods that you wrote down into the server name or address field. Leave the password field blank. It will look something like this (with a different number string of course):

6. Press the connect button to take control of the LabQuest. It will show you the screen of your LabQuest device. You can now control the LabQuest by clicking on the screen in Viewer with your mouse.

7. Now, without touching the screen of the LabQuest, you should set it up as desired experiment. After it is in position you should retreat to a safe distance with the computer you are controlling it with.
8. Using the mouse pointer in Viewer as if it was your finger you can control the LabQuest device as normal, as seen in the screenshots below.
