Access Applications

Updated:

You can access applications in the following way:

  1. Click on the Finder icon on the dock.
  2. In the new window that appears, click Applications under Places in the sidebar on the left. (A shortcut is ⌘-A).
  3. This list will include every program that was installed on the computer. You can double click on a program to run it.
You can also use The Go Menu.

Quick Tip: Quit Applications
Closing the windows in an application will not quit the application. To quit an application, click on the application's name in the upper left of the screen next to the Apple menu and select Quit [Application Name] from the drop-down menu. You can also press ⌘ + Q.

Quick Tip: Switch Between Open Applications
When you switch between applications, the name of the current application will appear in bold letters at the upper left of the screen next to the Apple menu. There are a few ways to switch between open applications.

  1. In the Dock, click on the icon of the application you want to work with; OR
  2. Click and hold the ⌘ key. Then press the tab key at the same time. As you press the tab key while continuing to hold the ⌘ key, you can cycle through the open applications.

Quick Tip: Hide Applications
Hiding an application is a quick way to clean up your screen. When you hide an application, the whole application disappears into the background, but does not quit. It is just hidden from view. You can get it back by using the Switch Applications tricks as described above. In most applications, you can hide the application by clicking on the application name in the upper left of the screen and selecting Hide [Application Name] from the drop-down menu. You can also press ⌘ + H.

Quick Tip: Change Application Preferences
In each application, you can change the settings for that application by accessing its Preferences. To access the Preferences for the open applications, click on the application name in the upper left of the screen and selectPreferences.

  • Bonus tip: The keyboard shortcut for the preferences menu in most applications is ⌘ + , (comma).
