By subscribing to calendar feeds in SIS you can send all sorts of information to a calendar app on your iPad, phone, and computer. You subscribe to a calendar in Google Calendar by generating a URL and entering it into web version of Google Calendar (not the app!). This article will show you how to put a calendar into Google Calendar on your iPad (or iPhone).
Calendar Strategies
SIS will offer you many choices of calendars to which you can subscribe. It's best to pick and choose only the calendars that will be most useful to you and to put events of different types in separate calendars so that you can show or hide events as you need them to unclutter your calendar. This strategy will also allow you to use different colors for events of different types.
To Generate a Calendar URL
- Using the CHROME browser (NOT Safari), go to your SIS page.
- Click "Calendar" in the banner at the top of your SIS page.
- Click the "radio wave" button on the right of the black banner at the top of your calendar.
- The resulting window has sections for "My Calendars" and for "School Calendars." Here you will select only the calendars that are important to you.
- Tap on the arrow by "Individual feeds" to the right of the small blue "My Calendars."
- Of the options that appear, "Schedule" is certainly one you will want to add using the process described below. If you are in a sport, "Games/Practices" is also good to have.
- You also have the option to add an "Assignments" calendar. Please understand that that clutters up your calendar; however, you will be able to show and hide the calendar easily.
- For "School Calendars" you may want to subscribe to "Major Dates Only" if you want to have our days off on your calendar.
- When you have selected the calendar you want, long tap on your chosen blue title. In the window that pops up, tap on "Copy Link." If no window pops up, you are probably in Safari, and you need to open SIS in Chrome.
To subscribe in Google Calendar:
Once you have copied the link, you need to switch to the Desktop version of Google Calendar in your browser using this link.
In Google Calendar, locate Other Calendars in the list on the left, and click on the "+" next to it. If you don't see the "+," you are in the app and not in the web version.
In the menu that pops up, choose "From URL," and paste your copied link into the box. Then tap the "Add calendar" button.
To Change your Calendar Name
By default, Google Calendar names the calendar with the URL you copied, which looks very junky and starts with "webcal://burkeschool...". To change the name:
- In "Other Calendars" on the left, tap on the name of the calendar to rename. An "X" next to 3 dots will appear.
- Tap on the 3 dots, then tap on "Settings."
- In the first box (entitled "Name") rename the calendar. Unfortunately, the web address will be long, and there is no "Select All" option. So you will have to do a lot of deleting.
- The new name will save automatically.
Repeat the process for the other individual calendars you would like.
