Changing the Default Program for opening a filetype

Updated:

Have you ever double-clicked a Word document and seen it open in NeoOffice instead? Or you double-clicked a PDF file and had it go to Photoshop instead of Preview?

Your filetype associations are probably off.

These keep track of which program is the "owner" of a particular type of file, which determines which program opens when you double-click each kind of document. This usually corresponds to a filetype extension, such as .pdf, .doc, .zip, .jpg, etc.

  1. In the Finder, locate a file of the type in question, eg a Word document ("Affadavit.doc") that opens in NeoOffice. Note: you will have to do this for each kind of document giving you trouble: once for .doc files and Word, once for .ppt files and PowerPoint, once for .psd files and Photoshop, et cetera.
  2. Single-click on the file to select it (don't double-click and open it — if you did double click, quit the program).
  3. Go to the File menu > Get Info, or type ⌘-I.
  4. If the Open With section seems to be collapsed, click the disclosure triangle to the left of "Open With" to expand it. (In my example image, the Spotlight Comments, More Info, and Name & Extension sections are collapsed, but General and Open WIth are expanded.)
  5. In the dropdown menu, select a new program. (In my example, the program is correctly set to Microsoft Word.)
If you are working with a .doc file, choose Microsoft Word. Similarly, .ppt with PowerPoint and .xls with Excel.
  6. If you want this change to apply to all files of this type (in my example, any .doc) instead of just the one you've selected, click "Change All…" and confirm.
  7. Close the Info dialog.
  8. Double-click the file to confirm that the correct program opens.
