There are times when you may need to reset your Wifi settings on your computer. Resetting your Wifi can help with connection issues around the Burke campus or at home on your MacOS computer, this can be done by following the instructions below.
1. Turn Wifi off
Simply turning off your Wifi and then turning it back on again could solve your Wifi issue. Doing this will make your computer locate the nearest Wifi access point to get the strongest signal to the network.
- Click on the wifi icon
in the top menu bar (by the clock) of your computer. In the menu that appears, click the toggle to turn off Wifi.
- Wait for 10 seconds and then click the toggle to turn your Wifi back on.
- Once Wifi reconnects, try to access a website to see if your connection has improved.
If this does not solve your issue, move on to option 2.
2. Forget the Wifi Network you are connecting to
Your computer stores information about the wifi networks you normally connect to. This can sometimes cause the computer to attempt a connection with incorrect credentials or the Wifi information has been corrupted. You can "forget" this network so that you can start fresh as though you never have connected to the Wifi network before. Your computer will see it as a new Wifi option and will prompt you to enter the password for this network connection.
- Click on the wifi icon
in the top menu bar (by the clock) of your computer. Choose the "Wi-Fi Settings" option at the bottom of the menu that appears.
- In the Wi-Fi settings, locate the Wifi network you are going to forget. This will work for any Wifi network you have connected to. Click on the circle (more) icon for the network and click the "forget this network" option.
- You will be prompted to approve the "forget" request. Click the "Remove" button.
- Now you can use the Wifi menu to choose the network you just "forgot."
- If it's Burke-Student, you do not need a password. If it's Burke-FacStaff, you will be prompted to enter the network password.
- Once you have reconnected to the network, open a web browser and visit a website to make sure your connection has been established.
If this does not solve your connection issues, move on to option 3
3. Restart your computer
Often just simply restarting your device will solve many issues, including a Wifi issue. This could be your first troubleshooting option, but a restart can take a little time to complete and you may wish not to do this during a class.
Click on the Apple Menu in the upper left-hand corner of your computer and choose the "Restart..." option. This will shut down all open applications and restart your computer.
When the computer has started back up, check your Wifi connection by opening a web browser and visiting a website.
If this does not solve your issue, please move on to option 4.
4. Visit Wan
If none of the above solutions help you with your Wifi issues, please contact Wan for a visit to have a little hands-on troubleshooting.
